Akelos aims to support rural engineering project efforts around the world through consultation with various stakeholders on assessing, designing, implementing, and evaluating new and existing water projects.

Akelos was established in 2016 in a small office of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. A diverse group of students who had experience working on developmental water projects recognized the disparity between engineering solutions and social integration. They decided to use their collective skills to help collaborate with existing projects to better address the specific needs of each individual project.
